Red Windmill was a temporary sculpture on a monumental 18th-century flour mill called De Hoop, in Gorinchem (NL). In 2010, a six-thousand-metre-long red rope was attached to the windmill’s sails. Scarlett Hooft Graafland, assisted by a team of millers and the wind, created a gigantic spider’s web. She photographed the creation from different perspectives, also from above, resulting in the series Red Windmill.
About Hooft Graafland
Scarlett Hooft Graafland (1973) is one of the best-known Dutch photographers. Her professional practice combines performance and sculpture; her landscape interventions captivate viewers and help us see more clearly.
Much of Hooft Graafland’s work is situated in landscapes around the world, which can feel alienating to us. The artist is keen to emphasise the vulnerability of these places, such as the Bolivian salt flats and the ice landscapes in Canada. However, she also made this remarkable series, which focuses on the characteristic Dutch landscape. Hooft Graafland’s series Red Windmill complements the 19th-century landscapes at The Mesdag Collection. Her work will be displayed alongside Windmill by Jacob Maris.
