Interior of the Great or German Synagogue in The Hague
Johannes Bosboom (1817 - 1891), c. 1880-1891
oil on panel,
57 cm x 44 cm
The Mesdag Collection, The Hague
Johannes Bosboom’s church interiors met with great success. He painted the Great, or German, Synagogue in the Wagenstraat in The Hague on several occasions. This building still exists, and now serves as a mosque.
With just a few loose brushstrokes Bosboom here suggests sunlight entering the synagogue. The light is reflected in the chandelier. Mesdag bought this oil sketch shortly after Bosboom’s death from the artist’s estate, together with 8 other unfinished paintings and 86 drawings.
